Distortion To Static

Mixing and blending is so yesterday.
I recall tracing my path to ME-J'in and my future plans with future beats (or beat music, Hoodtronica™), I knew that I wanted to sonically have something as fresh as it was new. Why should riddims always be mixed and blended? Why not fade out and transition in a storm of electronic haze?

BAM.

Enter the Korg Mini KaossPad. [click for larger]

Essentially, this is the small version of the well known Kaos KP3 (which I didn't feel like springing $400 for, though I did like it whilst @ the RBMA) which is essentially 1st for foremost an effects processor and has some extra bells and whistles.

One thing I loved about the Mini KP on paper, is that it was a) a dedicated effects box - that's all it does, and b), runs off batteries.
I've used it 1nce so far and plan to run it tons more as I slowly work into my routine.

My setup was outed in a photo @ GLORIOUS a few weeks back. LOL. This is far from being Mossad so all good.
Anyhow, the only challenges I see so far are the 99 effects - many of them are a little too similar, and using RCAs in a XLR world can be challenging as well. But no worries, adapters all day. As well, the sensitive preset input level. DROVE ME BANANAS my 1st night. ARGH.
If I ever get this mixtape done maybe you'll hear this thing @ work! It's all for you!
Anyhow, wish me luck.

92BPM x Stones Throw do James Pants: May 22nd 2008

Like it says.

92BPM meets Stones Throw.

On the plate, will be a celebration of the James Pants release, WELCOME. A new record from the West Coast native James Pants, dropping on famed West Coast mini powerhouse Stones Throw.

How would I describe Welcome?? Let me borrow a quote from XLR8:

"Future shock era, Herbie Hancock, LA electro New Age-y French disco."

Add a little je ne sais quoi, and you have James Pants' Welcome. Nonetheless, come out and judge it for yourself. Deets are as follows:

JAMES PANTS - WELCOME Listening Party - Toronto Edition.
Thursday May 22nd 2008
@ Stone Lounge (below Revival)
783 College St (@ Shaw)

Rollin Rollin Roland

Experimenting.

That's all I'm trying to do. So, some know that I've been talking about getting an epoxy kitchen countertop - where I'll start to spend some time cooking... Holy triple entendre.

So, looking for some little toys here and there, my man Delphi oracle got hooks, Hizzy gets a look.

The Roland SP-555 is what I ended up putting my hands on. I certainly wanted a sampler to run some extra boom to my sets, but I also knew that I use it to screw around some more, beyond just triggering some sounds.

Wrd is that Madlib is a big fan of the SP series with the 303 aka Dr Sample being the weapon of choice and apparently also using the SP-606. The 555 is seemingly of the same family. Pads, sampling, effects... All I need.

So on a friday aft, I get the call from Delphi. Head to the west my man, the west..... So I jumped on the hwy and made my way down to Mississauga. One of the few and rare times. But for this? hell yea...

Got my box, and made my way back home. The proverbial unboxing took place:

Fresh from the warehouse...

Anyhow I'm off to buy a CF card to store some sounds. Can't wait. Next 92BPM might be pretty fresh. And speaking of 92 BPM, this 1st one was what i expected: attended by true fans of the riddims. Looks like I had gems and still did not even begging to get into what's out there. But I do have some surprises in store.

Shouts to my man Sylvr Mayne, Nick H, Oli etc... I could go on. Anyhow, come out for the next one for some of that Baptism by Beats from your man, El Salvador!

Holla!

Still the Spirit of 92 (v1.5)

"I usually to rock around 92 bpms" - Jay Dee

In my endless pursuit of grooves (shouts for Pursuit Grooves), I decided to throw something real quick and painless. Even though I had to kill the original night, (Thursday March 6th Two Thousand And Eight), you can still come and check for me:

92 BPMs. That's a nice tempo. Although, I have been enamored with riddims from the 85+ range (with a special exceptional shout to my man Samiyam for that 70 some bpm Crank Dat rmx). But seriously, there's so much good music out there that I can hold it back only so long. My man Jay has offered some priceless tutelage and it's again time to show my wares. On site will be the MP, much as I did that night @ Rockit but it almost sounds like ppl really took notice when I opened w/ Taktiks @ Stone Throw's MOVE 2 weeks ago. Say wrd.

Anyhow, the goal is to play good music, and have a good time. If you're down, you'll come check me, no??

Anyhow, here are the event deets:
92 (ninety-two) BPMs
Thursday April 24th 2008 - 22h-02h
Stone Lounge (below Revival) - 783 College
FREE all night.
FaceBook event is here

So there you have it. And, for who are tired of what you're used-ta, come thru 92 and come listen to some of this Brewster . Shouts to Suff for this ridiculous banger. Enjoy.
See you Thursday. say wrd.

Mezzo Forte: MP Madness

Man, what a night. So, this was my 1st official gig inna min [read almost a decade - real talk], I had a f*cking blast. Essentially, this was all born out of RBMA. After seeing some now friends of mine rip it up, I just had to make that dip. It was the change I had been looking for.

So I showed up last night @ Andy's Pool hall w/ the MP in hand, as well as the recently bought Serato (those guys are ca$hing out hand over fist - not mad. That device is solid). In concept, after making all my midi assignments, I knew that this set up should work. And it did. I ran my whole set on the MP. Pitch and all. It was nuts, but fun. I need efx now. The blends were train wrecks @ times, but that was actually my 1st time using it. Seeen.

So I had a bunch of bangers that I had been longing to play for cats. Robotica, Future Beats, Hoodtronica - what ever tickles your fancy ---> it ran all night. And oh yes, some Detroit delerium as well. ;)

A massive shout to CRCL RSRCH. Let's build for sure. Lifetime of blies to Scarlett. Could not have started w/o you dude. Link up soon, seen?? Good look to the ones who came thru and repped. That bitter cold is so not sexy. Bday shout to Harold & Jee-EM. Shouts to my man BB for the shots. Needed those!!!

And whilst I'm beginning to get thing poppin for the Roboticaphiles, ppls like A.D.A.M. are showing cats how to change your style. BANGER!! Say wrd. Enjoy. (and yes, this was one of the man EIDs I dropped last night).

Better than Jordan

After some years of contemplating a return, I will essentially make it official: Your Fave Ex Boyfriend™ is back! I will dust off the needles and come out of retirement to take another stab @ the 12s. Been a while but I forever missed playing out. Much of this is due to my most recent stint as a member of the Red Bull Music Academy. It's been so motivating. Considering that I have constant access to music I love, why the hell not.
In any case, DJs need not to worry as I'm not here to cut the pie that much thinner. The majority are out playing the same and I'm going in a place seldom occupied if @ all. Where's that?? Well, come check me out Tuesday Oct 9th @ the Red Bull Music Academy Festival Hub located @ 394 Queen St West from 5-7pm. Will be a blast. RBMA will be screening tees for free. Might be rusty, but this will be the 1st of many nights to come.

Hope to see you there. Info below, but you can also check out the the FaceBook event.
